£5m pledge to help abused
MILLIONS of pounds in extra funding has been pledged to help females affected by gender violence after rates spiralled during the pandemic.
Around £5 million will go towards charities such as Scottish Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis Scotland to help with the spike in referrals.
They will share £4.5 million to help with the ‘vital’ work that they do, Equalities Minister Christina McKelvie said.
The remaining £500,000 will be split between 12 specialist groups offering support services. Announcing details of the cash support, Ms McKelvie stressed that ‘violence against women and girls is one of the most devastating and fundamental violations of human rights and is totally unacceptable’.
She added: ‘I know demand for these services has increased.
‘This in itself is appalling and I am determined to support rape crisis centres and domestic abuse services, which provide a lifeline for many women and girls.’
