GLOBAL GIANT... WITH ROYAL APPROVAL

-

IT is the world’s biggest salmon producer, harvesting about 436,000 tonnes of fish a year – equivalent to a fifth of global stocks.

Headquartered in Bergen, Norway, Mowi operates in 25 countries and last year reported turnover of £3.2 billion. Earlier this month, the company had its Royal Warrant, which it has held since 1990, extended to 2027 – making it the only supplier of fresh salmon to the Royal Household.

The firm – formerly known as Marine Harvest – has eight freshwater farms and 40 seawater sites in Scotland. It supplies a number of UK supermarkets, including Sainsbury’s, and prides itself on its RSPCA Assured salmon.

Between January and September 2020, Mowi reported that more than 1.1 million salmon had died at its Scottish farms before they could be harvested.
