■ In an opinion piece, ‘Shot down by Facebook’s idiot censors’ (13 Dec), we stated that a ‘major experiment’ had found that mask wearing was ‘useless’. This was misleading: the study had not found that wearing a mask was ineffective at reducing the wearer’s risk of contracting Covid-19. Additionally, the objective of the study had been to assess whether the use of a mask reduced the wearer’s risk; it had not assessed whether wearing a mask affected the onwards transmission of Covid-19 from the mask wearer to others, and results on this point were ‘inconclusive’. This correction has been published following an upheld ruling by the Independent Press Standards Organisation.
