How to stay alive behind bars…? By telling tales

La Maca is a tough, violent prison in a forest in Ivory Coast. The prisoners run the show according to a complex set of traditions. A new inmate (footballer Bakary Koné) is designated ‘Roman’ – the prison’s storyteller – and he has to spin a yarn that holds the prisoners’ interest for a night if he wants to stay alive. So there are stories within stories and, unusually for a prison drama, mime and dance. Visually stunning, although the CGI in a fantasy sequence is disappointing. Sky
