Bronze for GB featherweight

BOXING:

Karriss Artingstall claimed Olympic bronze in the women’s featherweight category after being narrowly outpointed by Japan’s Sena Irie in their semifinal. Artingstall, 26, had guaranteed a podium position with a points win over Australia’s Skye Nicolson. The Briton’s flat-mate, Lauren Price, will also return home with a medal after beating Panama’s Atheyna Bylon 5-0 to book a place in Friday’s middleweight semi-finals.

TENNIS:

Novak Djokovic lost his cool and abused his racket several times during a 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 loss to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain in the bronze-medal match of the men’s singles. Ninth seed Belinda Bencic became Switzerland’s first female Olympic gold medallist in tennis with victory over Marketa Vondrousova, of the Czech Republic, in the final of the women’s singles.

SEVENS:

Great Britain’s women’s sevens team fell just short of a medal for the second Olympics in a row after losing 21-12 to Fiji in their bronze-medal match. Megan Jones scored both Team GB tries. ‘You can probably tell by all our faces we are absolutely gutted,’ said winger Jasmine Joyce.
