Jinky egg may fetch £10,000

- By George Mair

A RARE Faberge egg made in honour of Celtic legend Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone, could fetch £10,000 at auction this week.

One of only 19 created in 2005 by Sarah Faberge – great-granddaughter of the Russian Imperial jeweller, Carl Faberge – it is due to go under the hammer in Glasgow on Friday.

Made from silver, enamel, yellow and black gold, it opens to reveal a silver and gold figure of the footballer, dribbling with a diamond-studded ball at his feet. A sterling silver and 24 carat gold lion finial is a symbol of Celtic’s European Cup triumph in 1967, as part of the team dubbed the Lisbon Lions.

It also includes the badges of each of Johnstone’s winner’s medals, with the European Cup medal at the front.

James Bruce, of McTear’s auctioneers, said: ‘Not only is the Jimmy Johnstone Faberge egg a remarkable example of highquality jewellery in its own right, it is also an important piece of football memorabilia.’
