SENSATIONAL KERR RACES INTO HISTORY
Josh claims record 14th Scottish medal
JOSH KERR raced to a thrilling 1500metres bronze medal in Tokyo to create a new record of 14 medals for Scots at a single Olympic Games.
Following on from Laura Muir’s sensational silver in Friday’s women’s 1500m, Kerr’s final-lap surge moved Scotland one clear of the 13 medals achieved in London and Rio.
In doing so, Kerr (right) became the first male Scottish track medallist in individual Olympic competition since Allan Wells in 1980.
The US-based 23-year-old — who only survived the heats as a fastest loser — clocked a new personal best as Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen took gold in a new Olympic record. Compatriot Jake Wightman faded to finish 10th.
‘Today, I felt like a word beater and I just had to go out and perform,’ said Kerr.
