Nicole Kidman (right) has pretty much forged a television genre all of her own over two seasons of Big Little Lies, and then The Undoing, mixing Hollywood blockbuster production values, A-list acting talent and a glossy sheen of luxury to decorate the dark tales that lie beneath.

So it is with this eight-part series, in which she stars as Russian health guru Masha, who presides like a high priestess over her wellness resort Tranquillum House. As the psychological thriller begins, we meet the nine guests – played by stars including Melissa McCarthy and Luke Evans – who have been gathered together to be treated over ten days, in which they will be subjected to Masha’s uncompromising and strange methods.

Fans of The Good Place will also enjoy Manny Jacinto, who played Jason, here as the serene resort orderly Yao. ★★★★★
