Billy Monger: Changing Gear
Channel 4, 8pm
On April 16, 2017, shortly before turning
18, promising young racing driver Billy Monger's life was changed for ever – he had to have both legs amputated after a crash at Donnington Park. Only seven months later he was back behind the wheel.
Now he's pushing his body even further by testing himself alongside other sportspeople with a similar level of fortitude. In this documentary Monger trains alongside Paralympians, throwing himself into swimming with Alice Tai and getting out on the water with canoeist Charlotte Henshaw. He's also fitted with his first pair of running blades and, under the supervision of Jonnie Peacock (near right with Monger), learns to run again.
Then, in the programme's emotional conclusion, Monger returns to Donnington to lay to rest some personal ghosts by sprinting along its track.
