Public back oil and gas, poll shows

-

PLANS by the SNP and Greens to end oil and gas production in the UK have been rejected by the public.

Polling shows Britons back using North Sea oil and gas.

The Greens want to shut down the sector. Nicola Sturgeon also wrote to Boris Johnson asking him to ‘review’ the new Cambo oilfield.

Pollster YouGov asked 2,095 adults if they support oil and gas production in the UK, and found 48 per cent in favour, and 15 per cent against.

Liam Kerr, Scottish Conservative energy and net-zero spokesman, said: ‘This shows the public wants projects like Cambo to secure our energy supply and protect jobs.’

Lorna Slater, Scottish Greens coleader, said: ‘Polls this year said 75 per cent of people would like to be using renewable energy.’

A Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘Support for oil and gas businesses in the North Sea is conditional on them contributing to a sustainable energy transition.’
