Woman ‘stole rings out of open coffins’

A WOMAN in her 60s has been arrested after the disappearance of jewellery from coffins.

Police were called after a family noticed their deceased loved one had a necklace, ring and earrings missing following a visit by the unnamed woman.

Reports in French media said the family believed the woman was a friend who had come to pay respects.

As such, they left her alone with the open coffin at the funeral home in the northern town of Lievin.

Police found the missing jewellery as well as the wallet of another deceased person and a number of death notices.

The woman is due to appear in court next April.
