Body-in-river victim killed 13 years ago

-

A SUSPECTED murder victim whose bones were dumped in a river may have been killed up to 13 years ago, it has been revealed.

The remains of the unidentified man were found by a nature warden in two black bin bags he spotted in the River Stour in Sudbury, Suffolk, last August.

Following forensic tests, police have now revealed that the victim is likely to have been aged in his late 50s to early 60s, was about 5ft 6in and was believed to have died some time between 2008 and 2012.

Officers have tried to match the remains with missing-persons files but to no avail. They previously confirmed that DNA from the bones was not a match for airman Corrie McKeague, who disappeared in 2016 on a night out in Bury St Edmunds.

A post-mortem last year was not able to establish the cause of death but police launched a murder inquiry, which has so far collected 1,672 items of evidence. A 26-year-old man from Sudbury was arrested in May in connection with the case. He was bailed after being quizzed and has since been released under investigation.

Suffolk Assistant Chief Constable Eamonn Bridger said: ‘A huge amount of progress has been made over the past year on this extremely complex inquiry. We said from the outset this would be a long and methodical process and it has proven to be just so.’
