GLORY DAY FOR USA AS THEY RETAIN CURTIS CUP
THE United States retained the Curtis Cup with a 12.5-7.5 win over Great Britain and Ireland in Conwy, Wales, after the home team were swept aside in yesterday’s singles.
The scores were level at 6-6 after day two, but England’s Caley McGinty was GB&I’s only winner in the singles match-ups, with a 4&3 triumph over Gina Kim.
Scotland’s Hannah Darling halved her match with Jensen Castle but the US won six of the eight matches.
GB&I, who were beaten 17-3 in the previous Curtis Cup, started strongly by winning two of Thursday morning’s three foursomes matches and then winning two of the three afternoon fourballs.
But the US matched that performance in Friday’s foursomes and fourballs matches and had all the momentum going into yesterday’s singles.
It means the US have won 30 of the 41 contests, but it is their first away win in the biennial contest since their triumph at St Andrews in 2008.
‘It feels amazing to have come here and to leave as winners,’ said US captain Sarah Ingram. ‘We’ve had a spectacular week, with beautiful weather.
‘The people are amazing here, so welcoming and helpful — cheering us on as well as their own players.
‘We’re thrilled to have come away the winners.’
