40-YEAR BID TO BAN THE BOMB
SUPPORT:
IT is the world’s longest running anti-nuclear protest camp, established near Faslane in 1982.
At its peak, the woodland site was the command centre for dozens of protesters and attracted hundreds of visitors, united by a common cause.
Over nearly four decades, they have blockaded roads near the naval base, scaled barbed wire fences and boarded submarines. Their mass actions were often supported by politicians, such as Nicola Sturgeon before she was First Minister, George Galloway when he was Labour MP for Glasgow Kelvin, and then-Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan.
Today, there are only around four permanent residents left in the Peace Camp, but they claim they can call for back-up any time they need support.
One of the longest residents, Andy Freeborn, 45, who is originally from Dumfries, said: ‘I think we’re still as relevant today as we ever were.’
