Spice Girls: How Girl Power Changed Britain
Channel 4, 9pm
Together they made up a pop-group sensation whose impact in Britain and across the globe was unlike almost anything since The Beatles. But the
Spice Girls (right) were also five strong women who were at the forefront of changing attitudes within society and between the sexes.
Now this new series charts the journey of the hard-partying ladettes of the
1990s as they evolved from their selfprofessed creed of ‘girl power’, going right up to today and the advent of the #MeToo movement.
The opening episode’s archive footage offers a fascinating social history, but also an intoxicatingly nostalgic view of how the group mastered the pop-music publicity machine and conquered the world with their irresistible upbeat hits. ★★★★★
