VICTORY IN VIENNA SHOWED OUR TRUE ABILITY
SCOTLAND’s victory in Austria made for brilliant viewing. Steve Clarke’s players were competitive, bullish and confident. Everything they were not a week earlier in Copenhagen.
Against Denmark, I thought we stood off and looked a bit coy and shy. A shadow of what we are capable of.
I know it was a different level of opponent but from first minute to last, we were relentlesss in harassing Austria, drove the space and were all over the game.
It was a big performance, one we were all looking for to keep us in the hunt for Qatar 2022.
Most importantly, we have reminded ourselves that we are a good team.
We were all guilty of feeling dejected after Denmark, a million miles away from reaching the World Cup.
The irony is that if, before the games, we had been offered a draw in both Copenhagen and Vienna we’d have taken it. By doing it this way, we have actually taken more points.
The result will have given Steve great satisfaction and, rightly or wrongly, the temptation was there to stick two fingers up at people. That’s just the law of the jungle.
