Arrests over Orange Walk
SEVERAL arrests were made at the Orange Walk yesterday following accusations that people were stirring up hatred by singing ‘racist and sectarian’ chants.
Thousands of people took part in or followed the processions, shutting down roads in Glasgow city centre and prompting counter-protests.
Up to 800 police officers were deployed to manage the event, which was the biggest to be staged by the Orange Order since the global Covid19 pandemic began.
Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow, said: ‘We have already made arrests in connection with various offences and will continue to do so where required.
‘Once again, we see a number of people intent on causing offence and stirring up hatred by singing unacceptable sectarian and racist songs.’
He added: ‘ It is clear that sectarianism remains a serious, ongoing problem in Scotland.’
