Anger at Rayner’s ‘Etonian scum’ rant

- By Brendan Carlin POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

LABOUR’S deputy leader Angela Rayner was accused of resorting to gutter politics last night after reportedly branding Tories ‘homophobic, racist, misogynist scum’.

She is also said to have told her party’s conference that Boris Johnson’s ‘Etonian’ Government was worthy of a ‘banana republic’.

Last night, Tory MPs reacted in fury and demanded an apology. They also called on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to disown her ‘gutter politics’ tirade immediately.

Tory MP Tom Hunt said: ‘I don’t think anyone who makes those sort of comments has any place in British politics.’ Her remarks reportedly came at a reception on the opening day of her party’s rally in Brighton.

She is said to have told activists: ‘I’m sick of shouting from the sidelines and I bet you lot are too.

‘We cannot get any worse than a bunch of scum, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, absolute pile of… banana republic… Etonian… piece of scum.’

It is not the first time Ms Rayner has referred to a Tory as ‘scum’. Last year, she was forced to apologise after using the same insult against backbencher Chris Clarkson when he criticised her party’s opposition to the Government’s handling of the pandemic.

Last night, Foreign Office Minister Amanda Milling said: ‘Angela Rayner must apologise.’
