A House Through Time

BBC2, 9pm

-

David Olusoga (right) has carved out a new genre of social history in microcosm with his excellent series telling the story of the inhabitants of a single house.

Now, in the final episode of the current run, the historian brings the tale of the Victorian semi-detached residence at 5, Grosvenor Mount in Leeds from the Thirties up to the present day.

He discovers how one resident was an air raid warden as the Luftwaffe targeted the city's streets, while another risked his life as a sailor on a Merchant Navy ship under threat from Nazi U-boats.

Meanwhile, turbulent events in Greece propelled one woman into a marriage that would see her move into the house. But there's a different picture as we reach the modern era of a thriving student scene and Leeds' busy nightclubs, as fondly recollected by Olusoga's generational peers.
