Glass isn’t daft enough to think this run can continue

-

ABERDEEN manager Stephen Glass reckons only ‘an idiot’ would have believed putting a new team together at Pittodrie would be plain sailing. Maybe it’s best, then, for him not to go into why so many people appeared to be booing at the end of last weekend’s home loss to St Johnstone. Is it only idiots who would see reason to get upset at seven games without a win, including a League Cup exit at the hands of Raith Rovers?

Glass is six months in at the Reds. He has been trying to change the style of play and that’s not easy, but it’s not like he is just in the door.

Aberdeen is a club that comes with justifiable demands. Their budget demands certain outcomes. Derek McInnes, who made cup semi-finals and finals commonplace, left because he couldn’t finish third in the league and couldn’t add to the one trophy he lifted.

That’s the bar which has been set. That’s one reason why there was change.

Glass took a gamble basing his revolution around a 36-year-old former Celtic captain, an old friend, who looked dangerously close to being finished last season. Getting snappy when asked about punters booing and calling people idiots because they aren’t happy about his side being unable to buy a win despite spending plenty does not augur well.

Glass knows Aberdeen. He knows the stakes. He has to know runs like this cannot be tolerated for long.

Expect a heck of a lot more ‘idiocy’ at St Mirren this afternoon if his team don’t get the finger out.
