Spark that lit the Brixton riots
Three linked documentaries from director Steve McQueen look at racism in Britain in the early 1980s. The first is about the New Cross fire in January 1981 in which which 13 young black Britons were killed when attending a birthday party in South-East London. Many believed then and still believe that the fire was started deliberately and the perceived indifference of the authorities led to a day of action and, ultimately, to riots in Brixton, the subjects of the next two films.
