PICK OF THE DAY Ridley Road
BBC1, 9pm
The location and setting for this four-part drama aren’t that far from those of Call The Midwife: East London in the early Sixties. But be warned, this absorbing adaptation of Jo Bloom’s novel addresses a troubling chapter of British history.
Vivien Epstein (Agnes O’Casey, right) is a young Jewish woman from Manchester who has come to London to eke out a life away from her religious family. But rather than enjoying the newfound freedoms of the age, she is confronted by the growing threat of a far-right movement targeting black families and Jews and carrying out murderous attacks.
The stakes could not be higher in a storyline in which the political and personal blend together. Along with O’Casey’s terrific lead performance also look out for a scene-stealing Eddie Marsan as Vivien’s live-wire uncle.
