Retired NHS worker Dreane Williams is an apt narrator for this two-part documentary following four people with dementia over two years. Diagnosed with vascular dementia several years ago, she now has the chance to tell the world about the condition: ‘We want to show you who we are. But we don't know yet who we will be in the future.'

Bleak though the subject matter is, there are warm moments too. Former footballer Gilly gazes at photos of his old teammates and cheerfully wonders how he can remember their names from decades ago but not what he was doing yesterday. Still in his forties, former soldier Chris (right, with his sister Liz) quips: ‘It could be worse. I could be a Man City fan.'

But there's no avoiding the anguish and heartbreak that lie ahead in this arresting glimpse of the long, darkening journey so many of us will one day face.
