PICK OF THE DAY

Paris Police 1900 BBC4, 9pm & 10pm

-

Already a huge hit in its native France, this fascinating period drama becomes the latest continental cop show to grace the broadcaster's Saturday evening slot.

Written and created by acclaimed graphic novelist Fabien Nury, it features many of film noir's classic tropes while taking viewers deep into the Paris's dark underbelly, where anti-Semitism, violence, riots and conspiracies lurk just beneath the surface, always ready to erupt at the slightest provocation. Women's subjugation is commonplace too.

Against this backdrop, ambitious but principled police officer Antoine Jouin (Jérémie Laheurte, right) voluntarily takes on a new investigation involving a woman's torso found in a suitcase floating down the Seine. As he begins piecing together what led to the grim discovery, he starts to realise it involves more than just a psychopath with a bloodlust.
