Over-65s could fill UK job vacancies

-

With regard to Britain’s labour shortage – which extends far beyond the HGV driver crisis – there is a vast untapped market of professional and skilled employees out there.

Who are they? Over-65 retirees who, during their lifetime of employment, have built up a vast array of skills and experience and would appreciate the opportunity of a full- or part-time position. They have the ability to communicate with both staff and members of the public.

But they tend not to apply for positions, perhaps because they feel that, due to their age, they would not be considered for employment.

Yet for those who remain fit and healthy, employment would offer the opportunity to top up their pensions.

Employers could offer jobshare schemes with the over-65s in mind, and the experience these people can provide would bring benefit to their other staff and their company.

When I visit a shop, if any of the staff working there are of a senior age, I always ask their advice – they are full of knowledge, are pleasant and professional, and tend to find the time to discuss my requirements.
