Coach Wilson finds ‘template’

- By Calum Crowe

DANNY WILSON believes his Glasgow Warriors players have now set the benchmark for themselves after yesterday’s victory over the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship.

The final scoreline of 35-24 was misleading because Warriors led 35-10 after just 43 minutes, having scored five tries and blown away their opponents in every area. They even had a sixth score ruled out when a Sione Tuipulotu try was contentiously disallowed for obstruction.

Reflecting on a dominant victory, head coach Wilson said: ‘I thought the first 50 minutes was outstanding. We played some really good rugby and scored some great tries.

‘Had that try (Tuipulotu’s) been allowed on 50 minutes, I think we could have scored again and found another gear. But it was disallowed and, for some reason, the wind went out of the game.

‘There were loads of stoppages, loads of delays, loads of watching the screen. Then we made some changes, which was the right time to make them, and the momentum seemed to disappear.

‘I’m really pleased with the first 50 minutes. I think it’s the template of how we want to play. I was disappointed that the last 30 drifted away, but I won’t get carried away with downsides.

‘That first 50 minutes is up there with the best we’ve played since I’ve been here. To be as dominant as we were makes it the best we’ve played. It’s a template for how we want to play.’

There was a real impact made by new signings Jack Dempsey and Tuipulotu, and Wilson added: ‘Jack and Sione in particular have been excellent.’
