The Earthshot Prize 2021
BBC1, 8pm
There is ever increasing concern over the damage humanity has done to the environment, and the scale of the challenge we face is immense. That’s exactly why the Earthshot Prize was created by Prince William, Sir David Attenborough (right) and other campaigners and influencers.
Though the name harks back to the Nasa programme in the 1960s that put a man on the moon in less than a decade, the targets now are even more ambitious: fixing the climate, protecting nature and saving the oceans, among others.
It’s a ten-year scheme giving £1m to five pioneering projects a year, each offering a solution to a key issue. After last week’s series focused on the finalists in each critical area, we can find out who the first winner is in a glittering ceremony with music from Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Shawn Mendes. ★★★★★
