Handmade: Britain’s Best Woodworker
Channel 4, 8pm
Yes, the format is exactly like The Great British Bake Off, and it even features one-time baking-tent fixture Mel Giedroyc as its presenter, but this new series is a worthwhile addition to the reality competition genre and likely to inspire an army of new amateur carpenters.
The setting is a workshop on the Glanusk Park country estate in Wales as nine contestants line up to become champion. There are two judges: architect Alex de Rijke and the founder of the London School of Furniture Making, Helen Welch.
In the opening episode, the main challenge is to build a full-size bed over two days. Plus, this week’s skill test: hand carving. It’s fascinating to see the contestants at work, and this looks set to become a TV fixture. ★★★★★
