The Third Man (1949) BBC2, 2pm

Based on a Graham Greene script and brilliantly directed by Carol Reed, this sublime, atmospheric thriller gets better with age. Joseph Cotten stars as writer Holly Martins, who's searching for his shady pal Harry Lime in post-war Vienna. Orson Welles (above) is hardly in the film, yet his presence dominates as the enigmatic Lime. Superb. ★★★★★
