Villa in holiday heaven for children is an arts and crafts country gem

- By Paul Drury

SHILLINGHILL offers a fabulous escape to the country – a journey first undertaken by thousands of children more than a century ago. At the foot of the Lammermuir Hills near Humbie in East Lothian, this collection of detached arts and crafts homes once formed the Edinburgh Children’s Holiday Village, where disabled youngsters from the capital were treated to breaks.

The benefits of its getaways – paid for by the Children’s Holiday Fund – were quickly recognised, with children holidaying here found to be putting on half a pound a week, according to a 1913 report.

It added: ‘A quickening of intelligence and increased interest in work and surroundings are frequently noted by the leaders and by the children’s parents.’

More than a century on, the village buildings now lie in private ownership and the former Matron’s Home at No 8 has been transformed into a thing of luxury, perched adjacent to green fields with spectacular views at the front and back.

The property has been upgraded by the current owner, with quality fixtures and fittings throughout, including a Jacuzzi bath, steam showers, oak flooring, stone worktops and modern gas fires.

It’s also worth noting that the fitted televisions within the property are included in the sale price, a significant saving as there are at least ten of them.

One big screen is to be found in the swish conservatory at the back of the house but the view from here is so appealing, why waste your time watching Netflix?

The generous grounds extend to 0.8 of an acre, containing lawns, a phalanx of palm trees and a particularly ornate fountain feature.

An extensive monobloc patio includes an area for al fresco dining, which must be pleasant in the sunshine, with neighbouring fields as far as the eye can see.

Inside, a welcoming hallway leads to a bright living room with feature fireplace, dining room, kitchen/ breakfast room and a downstairs bedroom which is currently used as a gym.

The kitchen has a gas hob, double oven, several fridges and freezers, dishwasher and washer drier, all included in the price. Upstairs, the main bedroom benefits from an en suite bathroom with separate shower, fitted wardrobes and direct access to a balcony making the most of the open views.

There are two further bedrooms, both with contemporary en suites.

A Versace light box in the bathroom and associated Gucci accessories suggest the owner does not mind a bit of designer bling, a lavish trait that is evident throughout the house. For the car enthusiast, there is a detached double garage with electric doors. A CCTV system monitors the premises.

The nearby village of Humbie offers a primary school, Post Office and church.

Gifford, three miles distant, has even more facilities, including a bowling club and two excellent nine-hole golf courses.

Edinburgh lies just 20 miles to the northwest, easily accessible for the commuter or shopper thanks to the city bypass.

One throwback to Shillinghill’s past is the small charge payable to the factor, James Gibb, for the regular maintenance of communal areas scattered around the former holiday village.

It’s not more than £50 every three months and ensures the place is kept in tip-top condition.

Live here and you might even think you are on holiday.
