Rebel rally cry... ‘Let them eat cake’

- By Kirsten Johnson

CLIMATE change activists have asked the people of Glasgow to provide them with home-baked vegan cakes to sustain them during their COP26 protests.

Campaign group Extinction Rebellion has issued a call to home bakers to provide vegan treats for activists gathering in the city for the conference.

All baked goods must be free of any animal products and be packaged with a list of ingredients and can be dropped off at various points in the west and south of the city.

The group, which recently brought parts of London to a standstill, is also asking for volunteers to host ‘safe regenerative rest spaces’ and ‘emotional debriefs’ for demonstrators.

In an email sent to supporters yesterday, Extinction Rebellion bosses set out plans for its ‘Sanctuary Programme’. This initiative provides ‘spaces and events where activists can rest, renew their energy and connect with new activist allies’.

The organisers asked that all volunteers be ‘active listeners’.

They also asked to borrow fire pits, rainproof seating, cushions and blankets and battery or solarpowered lanterns, lamps and fairy lights to make rest spaces comfortable and appealing to visiting ‘rebels’.
