A portrait of the artist as a young woman... it’s Kirsty’s daughter
HER mother is one of Scotland’s best-known broadcasters, having hosted shows from Crimewatch to Desert Island Discs.
But now Kirsty Young’s daughter is also making a name for herself – not on TV or radio but as an up-andcoming artist.
Opting not to follow in her mum’s footsteps, Freya Jones has wowed the art world with her spectacular paintings, charcoal sketches and collage skills.
She regularly shows off her work on Instagram and counts Madonna and Claudia Winkleman among her legion of fans, with the singer writing about Ms Jones’s recent collaboration with New York artist Lorenzo Amos: ‘I want this piece.’
This month, society magazine Tatler also hailed the 21-year-old as one of Britain’s hottest 200 dates.
And it is perhaps no surprise – with her blonde hair and natural good looks, she bears a striking resemblance to Young, 53, who was born in East Kilbride.
London-based Ms Jones has said of her art: ‘My work is inspired by the observation of how people choose to live their life, from what they eat for breakfast to how they’ve buttoned their shirt.
‘I’ve always been conscious of the way people move, communicate and express themselves; attempting to capture that is what I try to do in my practice.’
She added: ‘Creating art – in any of its forms – is, I believe, entirely central to how we understand ourselves and, crucially, the other people we share the planet with.’
Ms Jones, who was brought up in the family home in Oxfordshire, got her first taste of fame after being pictured as a child with her famous mother on a day out. More recently, she modelled for Roland Mouret at London Fashion Week in 2019.
She was also seen alongside her father Nick Jones at Meghan and Harry’s Royal wedding, mingling with guests including David and Victoria Beckham and Elton John. The scene was narrated by her mother during her coverage of the event.
During lockdown Ms Jones, who has drawn pictures of Glasgow’s Mitchell Library for her portfolio, painted a family portrait of her parents and siblings at the dinner table.
