DISNEY+ DOCUMENTARY
Heartbreaking documentary exploring the life and death of legendary climber Alex Lowe (above). Max, Lowe’s eldest son, crosses the Himalayas to recover his father’s body following an avalanche that also killed cameraman David Bridges, more than 20 years ago. This awardwinning film documents the family as they come to terms with Lowe’s death. From finding a new lover to overcoming survivor’s guilt, it shows a family at its most vulnerable. From Friday
JANET JACKSON SKY/NOW DOCUSERIES
To mark the 40th anniversary of her self-titled debut album, Michael’s little sister Janet (right) appears in a four-part documentary about her life. There’s no soft-soaping as Jackson opens up on key moments, claiming she won’t gloss over any of her triumphs or tragedies. From Monday
THE TINDER SWINDLER NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY
It would be many people’s worst nightmare to connect with someone online and find out that they had lied about their identity. But what if you were then tricked out of millions of dollars? That’s the reality for these victims who are sharing their experiences with ‘Simon’, a man who posed as a jet-setting diamond mogul to woo women before embroiling them in an elaborate scam. This documentary promises drama and intrigue as three women attempt to hunt down the swindler and make him pay. From Wednesday
REACHER AMAZON DRAMA
Fans of Lee Child’s addictive Jack Reacher novels hated Tom Cruise in the role of the 6ft 5in musclebound action hero, as he simply didn’t measure up. What they’ll think of Alan Ritchson in the role in Amazon’s new series is anyone’s guess: sure, he’s got the height and muscles, but seems over-fond of a Bond-esque wisecracking one-liner… time will tell. From Friday
GETTING ON
BRITBOX COMEDY BOXSET
Written by and starring Jo Brand (above right, with Helen Griffin), Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine, this superb jet-black comedy takes place on the geriatric ward of an NHS hospital. Each episode focuses on the difficulties faced by the staff, which often result in their patients’ needs being sidelined. Bleak and uncompromising, the first two series were directed by Peter Capaldi, while Susan
Tully helmed the third.
From Thursday
STATION ELEVEN STARZPLAY DRAMA
A postapocalyptic series, but it’s not The Walking Dead – it’s more on The Leftovers side of Doomsday drama: arty, enigmatic and with a hint of magical realism. Kirsten (Matilda Lawler), an eightyear-old girl acting in a production of King Lear, and Jeevan (Himesh Patel), a member of the audience, are thrown together as a fast-acting killer virus is taking grip. Future episodes switch between that timeline and 20 years later when Kirsten is a member of a travelling Shakespeare troupe performing to survivors. Mesmerising. From Friday
DRAMA PAM & TOMMY DISNEY+ DRAMA
In 1995 a sex tape made by Baywatch star Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, who had married four days after meeting, was stolen from their home and the footage made available on the internet. It went viral. Predictably, the fallout was far worse for Anderson than for Lee. This eight-part dramatisation of the episode and its aftermath stars
Lily James (pictured, left) as the 1990s pin-up and Sebastian Stan – as portrayed here – as her extremely unpleasant musician husband. With I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie directing, it is compelling, risqué and entertaining.
From Wednesday
MURDERVILLE NETFLIX COMEDY
A US adaptation of the BBC3 comedy Murder In Successville. Will Arnett is Terry Seattle, a homicide detective who solves ridiculous murder cases, and is aided by a celebrity guest star in each episode. The guest has to improvise and guess who the killer is. It’s a weird mix of parody, sitcom and reality show. Guests include Sharon Stone and talkshow host Conan O’Brien.
From Wednesday
DER PASS
SKY THRILLER
The spooky crime thriller’s second series is just as enthralling as its predecessor. Detectives Ellie Stocker and Gedeon Winter (Nicholas Ofczarek, left) are called in to investigate after several female corpses are found on the German-Austrian border. Available now
WILD ROSE BRITBOX DRAMA
A star is born in this awardwinning 2018 musical drama which announced the arrival of Jessie Buckley. She plays Rose-Lynn Harlan, wannabe singer and struggling single mother-of-two. She’s desperate to leave Glasgow for Nashville where she believes she can make it as a musician, despite her responsibilities. Julie Walters and Sophie Okonedo co-star. And yes, that really is Buckley singing. From Tuesday
