You can go blind… with perfect eyes
PEOPLE with perfectly healthy eyesight can go blind, due to a little-known condition known as hysterical blindness.
Medical reports document cases whereby patients have visited eye specialists, complaining of being unable to see in one, or both, eyes. When specialists have performed tests, results come back normal.
One 18-year-old, featured in the American Academy Of Optometry journal, complained of blindness in the right eye, which she attributed to a surgical procedure. But visual tests showed ‘no organic cause’ of the problem. Experts are not certain what causes hysterical blindness but believe it may be triggered by emotional distress.
