Let us decide when it’s time to ditch masks

-

Health journalist Eve Simmons’s article about now being the time to take off our masks didn’t take into account the fact that we older people have had a couple of illness-free winters due to wearing masks. Let us make it our choice whether or not we wear one.

B. Cobbett, Stubbington, Hampshire

I don’t judge those who don’t wear masks and I expect not to be judged for continuing to wear mine. I will keep mine on for a few more weeks until we really see proof of the virus disappearing.

A. Henderson, Norwich

Miss Simmons was spot-on about taking masks off. I too see many people in supermarkets still in masks, some even wearing them under their chin. I refuse to wear one. Enough is enough.

Susan Woodward, Dukinfield, Cheshire

Eve’s comment struck a chord with me. In Wales, the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, has done everything he can to ensure his citizens are scared witless about the virus. In sleepy Lampeter, simply walking down the street without a mask provokes glares and great hostility from mask-clad passers-by. If this is how Mr Drakeford uses his devolved powers, I want none of it. John Freter,

West Wales

A great part of communication is visual and wearing a mask hides that smile, glance, curled lip, tongue in cheek and so much more. Small children rely on it so much when among strangers. To continue wearing a mask when it is not essential is selfish.

D. Smith, Nottingham

Let me explain why some of us would prefer not to ditch masks. Firstly, Covid has not gone away and some without symptoms could have Covid without realising it. My husband and I are elderly and we have no wish to risk becoming ill. Eve Simmons should mind her own business and let us get on with ours.

Mary Cameron, Chichester

I wear my mask whenever I’m out. I suffer from generalised anxiety disorder and for some reason the masks helped tremendously. I couldn’t care less if others wear them, but I don’t plan on ditching mine any time soon.

Lee Allen, Manchester

Wearing a mask should just be a personal choice. I have not had a cold or chest infection since wearing a mask, so I will continue to do so. There’s nothing wrong with them in my view, and those who want to continue should not be criticised in any way.

K. Williams,
