German chief says defeat to Rangers was ‘embarrassing’
FORMER Borussia Dortmund captain and future sports director Sebastian Kehl has admitted their humiliating defeat to Rangers was ‘embarrassing.’
His attack comes after current sports director Michael Zorc insisted BVB players should be ashamed of themselves.
The Bundesliga giants have been criticised in their homeland after losing 4-2 to the Ibrox side in the Europa League play-off, first leg.
Kehl — who won the title three times with Dortmund and will move from his role of head of first-team football to sports director at the end of the season — couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
He said: ‘We are very, very sober when it comes to the performance of the players.
‘We sat on the bench and thought: “Why are we starting like this?
Why don’t we realise how big this game is and how important it is?”
‘It broke all of our hearts. It was embarrassing.’
‘We have received a lot of justified criticism and the least we can do when we travel to Glasgow is produce an improved performance.’
Kehl rejected reports the club held a midnight crisis meeting to discuss the future of manager Marco Rose after the loss. He insisted: ‘That’s simply not true. I went straight home after the game.’
