GET THREE QUOTES AND AVOID PAYING IN CASH

-

● Get at least three quotes – and don’t just go for the cheapest. Follow up with references and contact these people to gauge the quality of previous work done.

● Look for the Government-backed TrustMark which means a tradesman has signed up to a strict code of conduct. With a TrustMark trader you also have an ombudsman who can step in if there is a dispute.

● Draw up a contract. If the tradesman does not have one, you can download a document from DIY Doctor.

There is nothing wrong with paying a deposit as long as you know exactly what has been agreed with regards to the cost of materials and work. TrustMark can also assist with drawing up any contracts.

● If you pay in cash there is little recourse if things go wrong. If the tradesman accepts a credit card payment, you might be able to claim back money from the card provider under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if the completed work is unsatisfactory or a company goes bust.

● For major work – costing more than £10,000 – consider using a third-party service where someone else will look after your money until the job is complete to everyone’s satisfaction, such as Home Improvements Guarantee.
