PATIENCE PAYS OFF AS CAMPBELL CLAIMS SCOTS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

- GRAEME MACPHERSON

NICK CAMPBELL admitted he had learned the most valuable lesson of his boxing career as he eventually stopped Jay McFarlane to claim the Scottish heavyweight title.

The former Glasgow Warriors forward was taken seven rounds by his durable if unorthodox opponent before the referee decided enough was enough and waved it off.

It was a messy, untidy fight that drew plenty of criticism on social media but Campbell felt it would stand him in good stead moving forward.

‘That was the most valuable seven rounds of my career so far, amateur or pro,’ he said.

‘I knew he was going to be tough. I hit him with some shots and he didn’t move. But I’m the proudest Scotsman on the planet to have the belt.

‘I thought it was going to be a long night. I just worked away, took a couple, worked on my craft and what I’d been practising.

‘If I go through my career blasting everyone out in two or three rounds, when I come up against someone who’s going to hit me back I’m not going to know what to do.’

John Docherty prevailed in another all-Caledonian clash against Jordan Grant, while fellow Scots Mark McKeown and Scott Forrest also enjoyed undercard wins.
