BA may let male crew paint nails

- By Natasha Livingstone

BRITISH Airways is considering whether to allow male cabin crew to wear ‘man buns’ and paint their nails.

An airline insider claimed that staff have been told policy changes may include the removal of gender-specific rules on hair, make-up and nail polish.

BA last night confirmed that it was examining uniform guidelines but no final decisions had been made.

The airline operates a strict uniform policy and sacked a male employee who had tied his long hair in a bun in 2018.

But new rules may allow men to have long hair and wear nail polish from next year when a revamped uniform will also be introduced. According to the source, the airline will in the meantime no longer strictly enforce its current policy, with some male cabin crew already sporting stubble or tying their hair up while at work.

BA’s uniform guidelines have traditionally been divided by gender with strict rules on permitted hairstyles, make-up and clothing, but it has recently made efforts to modernise its image.

A BA spokesman last night said: ‘We are reviewing our uniform and wearer guidelines but this work is still in progress.’
