WE LET IT SLIP

Scots triumph but Townsend hits out as Italy grab late tries

- By Calum Crowe

GREGOR TOWNSEND admitted that Scotland let their standards slip during the final 20 minutes of yesterday’s bonus-point victory over Italy in Rome.

Scotland had led 33-10 heading into the final quarter of the Six Nations clash at the Stadio Olimpico and looked to be heading for an emphatic win.

But they conceded two late tries as Italy finished the stronger of the two teams — and Townsend was frustrated with the slack defensive efforts from the Scots.

Scotland ran in five tries against the Azzurri and deserved their victory, which saw them lift the newly-created Cuttitta Cup at full-time.

It was a much-needed confidence boost after the defeats against Wales and France, with Ali Price named man of the match on his 50th cap.

But Townsend insists the defence must improve ahead of next week’s trip to Dublin, where they will face an Ireland team
