Between April and June, a low-growing mound of mossy foliage is smothered with green-eyed, white flowers, above.

2 CLARENCE ELLIOT

In late spring, 12in-tall red flower stems are launched from its small green rosettes and carry masses of pretty pink blooms.

3 PETER PAN

Forming a cushion of mossy leaves, this produces loads of star-shaped, rose-pink flowers on 4in stems during April and May.

4 SLACK’S RUBY SOUTHSIDE

One of the showiest saxifrages, with silver-green rosettes and two-tone, red and white flowers carried on 12in stems.

5 STRIBRNYI

Native to Greece and Bulgaria, this species boasts tight, blue-green rosettes and 4in-tall, stout stems topped with pink-purple flowers.
