Pay rise for WFH civil servants
CIVIL servants who are defying UK Government requests to return to their offices will get the same pay rise as colleagues who are travelling into work – despite saving a fortune on commuting costs.
The Cabinet Office last week announced that staff south of the Border would get an average pay rise of two per cent, with an extra one per cent for those in specific ‘priority’ areas.
Unions expressed fury at the below-inflation increase but did not mention that those who are continuing to work from home will be enjoying substantial savings in travel costs.
A Government insider confirmed there would be no bonus incentives for those who have returned to their office, nor cuts for those who have not. During lockdown, the average London-based worker was calculated to be saving up to £126 a month in commuting costs.
Civil servants based in the capital have still been receiving their special salary boosts –- known as London weighting – worth around £4,000, to cover the additional costs of working in the city.
