Le Pen closes in on Macron

-

FEARS of further instability across Europe are growing after far-Right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen surged in the opinion polls.

With voters set to cast their ballots today in the first round of the contest, a poll gave Macron 27 per cent of the vote against Le Pen’s 23 per cent – the closest gap so far.

Analysts say the cost-of-living crisis is among the reasons for Ms Le Pen’s growing support. Some observers also believe the president has been distracted by the Ukraine war.

Mr Macron has depicted his rival as a pro-Russian champion of antisemitism.
