We want to stay in the Union say 53% of voters

- By Gareth Rose

THE SNP’s independence campaign suffered another blow yesterday as a new poll showed Scots continue to back remaining in the UK.

Support for the Union is at 53 per cent, while just 47 per cent back leaving the UK, the BMG poll found.

Nicola Sturgeon is determined to force through another independence referendum next year, despite Scots repeatedly rejecting her obsession with separation.

The BMG poll is only the latest to back the Union. Of 20 polls in just under a year, only two have shown majority support for independence.

Pamela Nash, chief executive of Scotland in Union, said: ‘Yet another poll confirms that the majority of people in Scotland want to remain in the UK. It’s time for the SNP to end its obsession with trying to divide communities amid a growing cost of living crisis.’

Tory MSP Murdo Fraser tweeted: ‘Another day, another independence poll confirming the trend.’

The survey also found Ms Sturgeon remains the most popular leader of any Scottish party, with 50 per cent of voters happy with the job she is doing, and 34 per cent unhappy.

That compares to 44 per cent who are unhappy and 17 per cent who are happy with Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar received the backing of 26 per cent, with 23 per cent against.

SNP deputy leader Keith Brown said: ‘Poll after poll shows the people of Scotland trust and support the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon.

‘They know they deserve better than the damaging impact of Westminster control and how it is failing families across the country – especially with a UK Government not stepping up to protect households facing a cost of living crisis.’

BMG surveyed 1,012 Scottish voters over the age of 16 between March 25 and 31 for the poll commissioned by The Herald newspaper.
