Thousands head home despite bombing risk

-

THOUSANDS of Ukrainians have been queuing at the Polish border to return to their war-torn homeland to celebrate the Orthodox Easter today.

Despite a continued threat of bombing and calls by some politicians not to come back, there were tailbacks stretching miles at Medyka, the main crossing point, this weekend.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital remained dangerous due to the threat of renewed attack and landmines left by Russian troops. But Lesia Vasylenko, one of Ukraine’s most high-profile MPs, tweeted a photograph of queuing cars with the message: ‘Ukrainians are coming home. Easter is a time to stand united and pray for Ukraine.’

Since the Russian invasion began, five million have fled Ukraine but the UN estimates about a million have since returned.
