Shocked shoppers watch as bus engulfed in flames

A MAN was taken to hospital after a double-decker bus burst into flames yesterday.

Shoppers in Glasgow city centre looked on as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service brought the blaze under control.

The driver and passengers were safely evacuated and the man taken to hospital was said to have injuries which were not life-threatenin­g.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Officers are in attendance at a vehicle fire on Renfield Street to assist with traffic management.

‘A 54-year-old man has gone to hospital for treatment.’ A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We were alerted at 12.15pm to reports of a fire affecting a bus on Renfield Street.’

A spokesman for operator First Bus said: ‘The safety and wellbeing of our passengers, drivers and the public are our number one priority and we will be conducting a full investigat­ion into how the incident happened.’
