They wish! BBC’s Naga jails wrong Boris in on-air gaffe

- By Jake Ryan

FOR someone previously accused of Left-wing bias, it was an unfortunate slip of the tongue.

BBC presenter Naga Munchetty gaffed yesterday in a story about Boris Becker being sent to jail by saying that Boris Johnson had ‘spent his first night in prison’.

Reminding viewers of the headlines, she said: ‘Three-times Wimbledon champion Boris Johnson has spent his first night in prison. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years for hiding assets to avoid paying debts.’

The error was pounced upon by those who suspect Ms Munchetty of Left-wing BBC bias. The 47-yearold was reprimanded by Corporation bosses last year for liking a series of anti-Conservative tweets posted after she and her co-host Charlie Stayt mocked the then Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick for the size of the Union Jack and portrait of the Queen in his office.

Yesterday, viewers used social media to accuse Ms Munchetty of allegedly showing her Left-wing BBC bias again.

One Twitter user said: ‘Anyone surprised Naga Munchetty said Boris Johnson has spent his first night in jail, instead of Boris Becker?’

Ms Munchetty has hosted the early morning show since 2010 and also appeared on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing programme in 2016.

She was cleared in a BBC bias probe in 2019 by then DirectorGeneral Tony Hall. She had criticised President Donald Trump’s comments telling women of colour in Congress to ‘go back where they came from’.

She remarked on the breakfast show that when she had heard the phrase directed at her, it had been ‘embedded in racism’.

After a probe found she had broken the rules, Lord Hall intervened and reversed the decision.
