TOT IN 45-MIN WAIT FOR HELP

-

AFTER waiting 45 minutes for an ambulance, Kinsley McMillan’s grandmother decided she had no choice – and took the toddler to hospital by car.

Kinsley, who has a rare brain tumour and has had 14 operations, should have been recognised by the ambulance call handler as high priority.

The two-year-old’s grandmother Karen Kennedy, 46, from Forfar, Angus, called an ambulance at 7.28am on April 27 but was told a clinician would phone back.

Miss Kennedy said: ‘I’m disgusted. You don’t phone 999 for a clinician to phone you back, you call 111.’

She rang 999 again but eight minutes into the call the case was labelled ‘critical’ and an ambulance dispatched.

At this point Kinsley had been waiting 45 minutes and was ‘going unconscious’, so Miss Kennedy drove her to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, leaving Eden, Kinsley’s mother, with threeyear-old son Freddie.

Kinsley, who was having seizures when she reached hospital, has made a recovery.

The Scottish Ambulance Service has pledged to investigate.
