WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE...
...between inflammatory bowel disease and IBS?
BOTH cause discomfort to the digestive system.
Inflammatory bowel disease is an umbrella term for conditions that cause inflammation and damage to parts of the digestive system, primarily ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Drugs can ease discomfort, as can surgery, but there is currently no cure. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS, describes a set of symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, gas and bloating. The cause is not fully understood, but problems can be exacerbated by certain foods, stress, hormone changes and medications. The condition is treated by medication, therapy and avoiding triggers.
