Fuming Garcia set to sign for Saudi series

-

SERGIO GARCIA is set to sign up to Greg Norman’s breakaway golf series following a rant over a ruling at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Garcia raged he could not ‘wait to leave this tour’ after a rules bust-up in Maryland on Thursday.

That prompted speculation that the Ryder Cup star was on the verge of demanding to play in the first of Norman’s LIV Golf Invitational Series at Centurion near St Albans next month. Last night, Garcia’s management company reportedly confirmed the 42-year-old former Masters winner has asked the PGA Tour to be released to play in the £20million event.

Garcia blew his top when a rules official deemed he took longer than the allowed three minutes to find his ball at the Wells Fargo. He was forced to take a penalty drop and even though the decision was later overturned, the Spaniard reacted badly. ‘I can’t wait to leave the tour,’ he stormed. ‘I can’t wait to get out of here. A couple more weeks and I won’t have to deal with you any more.’

Thorbjorn Olesen, on 11-under, takes a three-shot lead into the final round of the British Masters at the Belfry. Richie Ramsay is four off the pace.

TEENAGE star Carlos Alcaraz proved he is the real deal by stunning Novak Djokovic just 24 hours after slaying Rafael Nadal to reach the final of the Madrid Open.

The 19-year-old Spaniard beat Djokovic 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 in a thriller which lasted almost four hours.

Alcaraz, roared on by a raucous home crowd, delighted his army of supporters with some brilliant drop shots and eventually got the better of the Serb on his third match point.

After toppling his hero Nadal in the quarter-finals on Thursday, the

world No 9 became the first player in history to beat Djokovic and Nadal back-to-back on clay.

He will face either Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
